The Month of Tevet: A Time of Growth Through Challenges

Tevet, the tenth month of the Jewish calendar, carries a deep spiritual message. In Kabbalistic teachings, the number ten symbolizes completion and divine order, as seen in the Ten Commandments and the ten sefirot (attributes through which HaShem interacts with the world).

Tevet occurs in the heart of winter, a season marked by darkness and cold. This reflects a time when light seems hidden, and challenges may arise. However, Kabbalah teaches that moments of hidden light are opportunities for personal growth and inner transformation. The task during Tevet is to uncover the divine spark within the darkness and bring light into the world.

The tribe associated with Tevet is Dan, symbolizing judgment. This reminds us to evaluate our actions and refine ourselves. Yet, true judgment must come from a place of balance, kindness, and self-awareness.

Tevet also connects to the sense of gvourah (Discipline and Strength) in Kabbalah.

Lighting the Chanukah candles during Tevet’s early days reminds us that even a small light can dispel much darkness. This teaching carries through the month, encouraging us to illuminate both our lives and the lives of others.

Tevet challenges us, but it also empowers us to grow spiritually and bring more holiness into the physical world.
