The Dual Nature of Fire: A Reflection on Shovavim and Teshuva..

Fire is one of the most profound symbols in creation. It represents both the creative power that fuels life and growth and the destructive force of our greatest adversary, the yetzer hara (our inclination toward negativity). The Gemara teaches that the yetzer hara is so formidable that only Hashem can save us from succumbing to it.

Our sages draw a powerful parallel between this spiritual battle and the current period of Shovavim. This time, beginning with the fast of the 10th of Tevet, is especially suited for teshuva (repentance) for our transgressions related to kedusha (holiness). The 10th of Tevet commemorates the start of the siege of Jerusalem—a siege that, two and a half years later, culminated in the burning of the Beit HaMikdash, the holiest place on earth.

Can we overlook the message of this historical and spiritual connection in light of today’s events?

Are we prepared to avoid another fire, a spiritual conflagration that could harm us individually and collectively?

It is a fire of creation we should strive for—a fire that purifies, sanctifies, and illuminates. It is this divine fire that we seek, one that generates life, purity, and a brilliant future for our people and for all humanity. May it be so, b’karov, speedily in our days. Amen.
